The DPA experience
I have a rather interesting post that might come off useful to some of you guys that i'm going to share, which is about most the questions in your mind when you came across DPA or 'Direct Poly Admission'.
Okay firstly, you need to have a course that you die hard really want to get in. Something you have great passion, desires and a place where you imagined you belonged.
Secondly is do not give a fuck about what your grades are at the moment. Don't let bad grades get in your way of pursing what you want. Or need in your life i would say.
And tbh, not only when you scored badly then you should DPA-ed but even if your grades are quite well but you want to secure a place in your course then you can also try it out! :-)
Step 1:
There will be an online application where you will do a write-up about why do you want to DPA into that course of your choice. Here you will write with all the reasons and how you promised to work hard in the course+ your ambition. Things that you do regularly which is related. (e.g for my course i say i bake and cook in my free time. / for a business course can talk about how you like to read books related to setting up business, opening online stores before / for design courses can talk about how you always read the style magazines, draw out sketches etc. )
You have to sound convincing in that limited characters given so that the course lecturer will be more interested in reading your appeal.
Step 2:
If you succeeded in making the appeal. The school will contact you by phone for the interview. I remembered mine was them calling me at the period of O levels Chinese orals in June. Okay so the interview is where all the real shit starts.
However if you did not succeed, don't fret because continue study hard and get your good grades, you can also JPSAE or JPE into the school after O level results.
Step 3:
The DPA interview.
Different schools and courses will have different styles. But i'm going to share how was mine like.
Before the interview, i got some of the documents ready too:
1) Mid-year results
2) CCA LEAPS records
3) Teacher's recommendation letter. ( Can request you teacher to write for you)
That day was a school date and i remembered taking a leaving school early form to go to the interview. There was the course manager together with a course lecturer. We were sit-ed in a round table with about 6-7 people who were applying for the same course. My course is Baking & Culinary science so they ask us questions like:
1) Why do you want to join this course?
2) What cooking classes have you attended?
3) Have you worked before?
4) Do you watch cooking shows on youtube?
5) Why do you think we need to learn statistics in this course?
6) Show us some of your work(Bakes, food cooked)
& the questions are open like throw free for anyone who have the guts to speak up and talk.
i think the general tip would be to be confident. talk with confidence. even if you might be wrong but don't just stay quiet throughout the interview.
next is to be honest, you wouldn want to make up a lie and then realise that you need more lies to cover it up.
Step 4:
KNOWING THE FINAL DPA RESULTS
the results will be out during end of august and that's when you can choose to accept or reject the DPA offer given to you. a friendly reminder that once you accept, it's very troublesome to backout & it will leave a bad impression on the school to you so please think carefully when you accept it. This is because the school specially save a space for you even if you didn do so well in your studies instead of offering to people who might get better grades than you.
F.Y.I : The minimum L1R4 is 26 points after your DPA application gets accepted.
Step 5:
Be prepared to start school early & enjoy the fun of poly earlyyyyy :-)
Here's how my DPA experience at Temasek Poly was like :
ORIENTATION WEEK we had team bonding games and dragon boating !!
#DPALOVE #DPA2015
Post feelings after DPA:
Do i regret signing up DPA and starting school early?
:NO, cause i had fun and i learn so much new things. I get a chance to know what to expect in poly as well.
I am actually really grateful to know the GLs (our camp leaders) and DPA classmates because some of them are such nice, amazing people.
I think it's a form of stereotype to say that DPA are for dumb people because surprising so many people i knew actually scored so much below that min of 26 points!
thanks for reading this longggggg post of mine and hopefully you know more of how DPA is like now :-)
xx,

Here's how my DPA experience at Temasek Poly was like :
ORIENTATION WEEK we had team bonding games and dragon boating !!
We were required to take 2 CDS(cross disciplinary subjects first)
with choices of :
1) TNS (transnational studies, compulsory)
&
2) Music/Introduction to Japan/Business Entrepreneurship
Mine was TNS with Business.
For TNS, we were required to have a 2 week stay in school of which we have to sign at 1030pm everynight if i never remember wrongly the timing. However, for weekends we have to go home.
This is how the apartment of GCV (Global Connect Village) looks like !!
((sorry it's so messy ahhahahah))
OMG i miss you guys :'( I miss DPA. This sucks.
In addition, we have to cook a dish related to our target country which for us is Italy and we cooked Aglio Olio!!
WOOHOOO.
Then business CDS, which during presentation we have to wear formal.
My Business group mates!! hahahah ivan being the only guy, we made him stand in the middle whoops.
My class T04!!
